Dave Chappelle Set to Return as Host of ‘Saturday Night Live’
Comedian Dave Chappelle is set to return as host of "Saturday Night Live," taking over for the episode following next week's midterm elections.
"SNL" confirmed on-air Saturday that the controversial comedian will host the Nov. 12 episode, which will air four days after the nation votes in federal, state, and local elections.
According to NBC, rap duo Black Star will join Chappelle as musical guests.
Chappelle's return follows a pattern of him hosting post-election shows since his first appearance on the show in 2016 and his return in 2020.
Chappelle sparked widespread outrage in 2021 with his Netflix special "The Closer," which contained homophobic and transphobic remarks that sparked outrage within Netflix. Ted Sarandos, Netflix's co-CEO and chief content officer, defended Chappelle's right to enter incendiary territory, but he was forced to apologise to Netflix employees for the tone of his initial remarks after employees expressed outrage.
Chappelle has made no apologies.
In a video posted in October 2021, Chappelle remained unapologetic about the special, which was accused of containing transphobic and homophobic remarks, prompting a Netflix walkout, saying, "I said what I said."
"It has been reported in the press that I was invited to speak to Netflix's transgender employees, but I declined." That is not true — if they had invited me, I would have accepted, though I'm not sure what we'd talk about," Chappelle said in the video. "I said what I had to say, and boy, did I hear what you had to say." I mean, how could I not? You stated that you want a secure work environment at Netflix. It appears that I am the only one who is unable to attend the office."
